This past week (March 21-25) was Ag Literacy Week. I had the pleasure of reading this year’s Virginia Ag Literacy book titled “Tales of the Dairy Godmother” to a local elementary school. The designated book has a different agricultural theme every year. Some years it is about a crop or animal, but this year the book talked about the journey that milk takes to become ice cream and how farmers care for their cows. Since the book was about dairy, who better to read to them than the Virginia Dairy Duchess! I enjoyed reading to the kids, and they listened very well to me. It amazed me how many good questions they asked, and I tried to answer all of them as good as I could. The district that this elementary school covers is a very rural area with farms everywhere, so naturally most of them knew a little bit about cows before I came to their class. Although I do not plan to work with children in the future, I am glad to have opportunities like this to interact with kids and teach them something new.
