I am about to start my junior year at South Dakota State University and wanted to give some updates on my current life and future plans. I am currently majoring in Dairy Manufacturing with minors in Biology, Health Science, and Food Safety. Attending a school so far away gives me more experiences in a different culture. I strive to gain a fresh perspective and continue to grow my knowledge about the dairy industry in other areas of the country. In my time at SDSU, I have worked in the SDSU Dairy Plant to learn about the process of developing many different dairy products such as cheese and ice cream. This unique experience has given me the opportunity to explore current research happening in the food science industry to develop new dairy products that are going on the market, as well as new ways to implement more dairy products into foods that already exist. The dairy manufacturing curriculum at SDSU will also give me practice in developing and experimenting with flavors and varieties of cheese. This will give me experience to start a farmstead cheese business with my own herd of Holsteins one day. I plan to grow my herd by breeding from my favorite line of red and white Holsteins that I started when I began showing at the age of nine. Also, while in college, I have earned my emergency medical technician certification and am currently working at the University Police Department on campus to gain experience as an emergency dispatcher. I plan to work for an emergency service in a rural area after college. Through this venture, I will be able to help many people in a small community who need emergency support. The first responder profession is in need of more people who have a farming background, especially in rural areas, because an understanding of a farmer's lifestyle can greatly impact the treatment that people will receive.
